Turning North...
Not me, my old friend Anna has reached the tip of South America and is heading north on her bicycle through the Andes as winter sets in !! Amazing pictures. www.wishfish.org For me, the urge to return for a ride through the Amazon is getting stronger.
The road to cocuy and home...
This remote area in the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy is a world away from the bustle of Bogota. The roadside grave is testament to that. Can’t help but wonder about the person buried ,marked only by a cross of sticks and a couple of ribbons. The vistas are stunning! Back on the blacktop 3 of these guys ( one stopped for lunch) were traveling with loads of sugarcane with absolutely no human in...
50,000 miles plus without...
an accident. Then today… I was fairly certain that the principal hazard for motorcyclists in Colombia was not the roads or in some cases the lack of roads, the policia, FARC, the paramilitaries, or the trucks but rather careless motorcyclists. Today I was proven correct… Riding east from Cali at a good speed on a beautiful divided road with a grassy median a motorcyclist coming from a feeder...
Los Tres Cruzes...
South Americans just love to build things on top of mountains that overlook cities. Before there were cell towers, there were churches, crosses and statues. Remember Rio’s “Christ the Redeemer’. Cali is no different. Hence the 3 crosses. It is an incredibly steep and difficult road to ride to the top. And for the intrepid there is a hiking trail. And then, after a white knuckle ride...
CALI AND SOUTH...
Riding west I passed long lines of semi trucks parked pointing east with the drivers chatting or lounging in hammocks slung under the trailers. It was one more time that I wished that I could converse in Spanish. Were they voluntarily idle or…? Turning South toward Popoyan and Ecuador there was almost no traffic on the Panamericana. Unheard of! I did meet Jan ( from Holland) and Richardo ( from...
A woman of courage in Bogo...
While the protesters hurled bricks and chairs at the policia who were cornered and hid[ng behind their shields, this woman jumped in front to ‘protect” them. The second photo shows the protesters pulling her away as the assault continues. The violence in Bogota and elsewhere is in sympathy for the small farmers in the south who are on strike. The army was called in today to restore “peace”in...
Rumours,Warnings...
And TV video of the rioting in Bogota is making me feel trapped in Armenia. Bogota and routes east to Venezuela are off limits. The riot police look like they stepped out of Star Trek in their body armor. Roads south of Cali are occupied and dangerous so Ecuador is a no go also. North to Medellin is also dangerous. My appeal to Aduana (customs) tomorrow to grant another extension on the Beemer without...
Structure and Religion...
I would never denigrate anyone’s religious beliefs but… ‘OUR LADY OF THE BURNED OUT HEADLAMPS” really has me baffled The trusses of this toll plaza roof are entirely made up of bamboo. I found it fascinating and wanted to get some close up shots but taking this photo nearly got me arrested. I guess ignorance of the laws is no excuse.
